Start Here, Finish at FAMU

We make it easy for you to start at NFC and finish at FAMU with the IGNITE program. Enjoy a seamless transfer. While at NFC, you’ll have the support you need to stay on track, like NFC and FAMU academic advisors, academic maps for your intended FAMU major, priority advising sessions, and IGNITE guarantees your admission to FAMU when you earn an AA at NFC.* * Limited access programs may require additional admissions and prerequisite requirements.

Program Benefits

  • Students with at least 50 credit hours and a GPA of 3.0 can get an IGNITE Card and free access to most FAMU activities, including campus recreation and Rattler athletic events.
    • If eligible to receive the IGNITE Card, IGNITE at NFC students can also purchase a Gym Membership at FAMU.

The Florida Community College (Ignite) Scholarship

Scholarship awards are limited. Awards will be made based upon the competitiveness of the current pool of candidates and until funds are exhausted. Scholarships will not be awarded to candidates who require remedial coursework or developmental education.

The Florida Community College program is a merit scholarship for recipients of an associate of arts degree from a Florida State or Community College.

Around 1950, the State of Florida System included twelve Black community colleges. Many of these colleges, such as Gibbs Community College (named after the founder of Florida A&M University), served as feeder colleges to Florida A&M University. In 1968, Gibbs College merged with St. Petersburg Community College, today known as St. Petersburg College.

From 1950 to 1968, these colleges provided opportunities for Florida’s citizenry to obtain a college education. Many of their graduates continued their four-year degrees on the highest of seven hills, Florida A&M University.  

In keeping with Florida A&M University’s tradition of providing access, the community college scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to those seeking to earn their bachelor’s degree.

Students are eligible to receive an award for four (4) semesters. Students must maintain enrollment in the degree program under which this award was made. Students may not change majors. Students must enroll in fifteen credit hours per semester. Awards are applied toward tuition and fees. Awards are not made during the summer term.


Eligibility requirements are as follows:

✓ Earned an Associate of Arts degree from a Florida state or community college;

✓ Member of the Ignite Program for at least a year;

✓ Have a 3.3 FAMU recalculated GPA at the time of degree conferral date;

✓ Must meet admission application deadline (Fall – April 1 and Spring October 1)

✓ Validated (submission of verification documents) and completed FAFSA on file in the FAMU Office of Financial Aid prior to January 1.


Eligibility for renewal is determined at the end of each semester. For automatic renewal, an award recipient must comply with the policies of the University scholarship program and the conditions.


Automatic renewal policies and conditions are as follows:

✓ Enroll in a minimum of 15 credit hours each semester.

✓ You cannot drop or withdraw from a course(s) after the official university drop and add period has ended (see University Registrar’s calendar).

✓ Earn a “C” or better in all courses each semester.  If you do not earn a “C” or better in each course, the scholarship will terminate.

✓ Earn a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better at the end of each semester.

✓ Maintain the academic program at the time of admission (you cannot change your major or degree program).

✓ Must enroll in degree program required courses each semester (must follow academic map)

✓ Validated (submission of verification documents) and completed FAFSA on file in the FAMU Office of Financial Aid prior to January 1.

✓ Earn 22 hours of community service at the end of each semester (must be documented in iSTRIKE via the Office of Student Activities)

✓ Recipients must participate in scholarship activities (President’s Convocation, Scholars Speak Series, etc.).

✓ Juniors and seniors are required to visit the office bi-weekly and to participate in study and tutorial sessions.

Failure to comply with the above requirements or other policies (see handbook) of the University Scholarship Program will result in the loss (termination) of your scholarship. Loss of scholarship (termination) will not be reinstated at a later date.

Participants must have between 0-30 earned academic credits to join IGNITE.  Enrollment in the program provides general admission into FAMU after graduating from a Florida College System institution. 

To be eligible for the FAMU Ignite Program, interested students must do the following:

Once a student has submitted their Ignite enrollment form, they will be contacted by their designated Enrollment Specialist with a “Welcome” email. The student’s designated Enrollment Specialist will guide the student through the transfer admissions process while still attending their current institution. 

Students who enroll in IGNITE will also have access to transfer student services staff, who will guide them through the transfer admissions process.  Additionally, IGNITE students can access curriculum maps, campus resources, and scholarships.

Eligible FAMU Ignite students will receive one (1) complimentary game ticket to all qualifying athletic events (excludes FAMU Homecoming and Florida Classic games).

Student membership to the Hansel Tookes Recreational Center (Please see a staff member at the recreational center for qualifying criteria).

The FAMU Ignite ID card is available to new IGNITE students with a collegiate grade point average of 3.0 or higher (4.0 scale).

The card grants FREE access to most FAMU athletic and on-campus events.  To receive the FAMU Ignite ID card, interested students must meet the following requirements:

  • Student must be currently enrolled in a Florida Community College
  • Student must have at least a 3.0 GPA
  • Student must not have more than 50 college credits earned.
  • Submit an unofficial college transcript to IGNITE@famu.edu to confirm eligibility.  Once confirmed, a clear headshot photo will be requested, and your new IGNITE Card will be created!
  • All IGNITE students are encouraged to serve as FAMU student ambassadors at their current institution.

FAMU and NFC agree to collaborate in innovative ways to promote expanded access for guaranteed admission for NFC Associate of Arts (AA) graduates and selected Associate of Science (AS) graduates to agreed-upon Florida A&M University baccalaureate programs consistent with university policy;

  • A sense of concurrent enrollment status for NFC students enrolled in identified transfer plans to include university advisors assigned to these students. A FAMU ID will also be issued to NFC Ignite students which would provide access to the Library, recreational centers, sporting events, etc. A picture ID must be provided by NFC Ignite students.
  • Expansion of FAMU financial aid resources to NFC students to support two-plus-two articulation agreements. IGNITE scholarships will be awarded ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 based on the following criteria and available funding.
